This email came to the PNN from the founders of 510Families.com, which looks like an interesting idea for local, kid-centric activities. Looking for something to do with the kids this weekend? Check it out and then come back and leave a comment on what you think of the site.

Dear Piedmont Parents,

There’s a new website in town. Launched by two local moms, 510Families.com is an interactive guide for parents to who want to have fun with their kids in the East Bay. Packed with fun activities, outings, classes, and even date night suggestions, 510Families.com makes planning your weekend (hecka) easier.

Founders Heather Gibbs Flett and Whitney Moss have been blogging as a duo since 2005 at their popular website RookieMoms.com. Their book, The Rookie Mom’s Handbook, published in 2008, provides “250 activities to do with (and without!) your baby”. Both have two children, ages 3 and 5, and live in Berkeley, CA.

Moss, previously a marketing manager at LeapFrog Toys says, “After five years of parenting in Berkeley, we found no single resource that allows us to find the best things to do with our children on a need-to-know basis. When I was on maternity leave, I would think, okay, it’s 10 am on Tuesday – what should I do with my baby? We created 510families.com to answer that question.”

510Families.com provides a searchable directory of kid-friendly activities and resources.

East Bay events calendar

Parents will find activities for babies and kids in Oakland, Berkeley and surrounding areas. The events calendar features drop-in classes, free storytimes, family-friendly festivals, and farmers’ markets. Website visitors can click on a date to see a list of scheduled events.

Local gems

Outings and activities are categorized by age of kid, location (within the 510 area code, get it?), and type of activity, for example “rainy day”. Daily blog posts give East Bay parents the scoop — recent articles include 20 Free Things to Do Before Summer Is Over, Cactus vs Picante smackdown (comparing two popular local taquerias), and the “Is it worth it?” series about memberships to local museums.

Online community

Site visitors can join the conversation. With comments enabled on every page, local parents can participate in the dynamic online community at 510Families.com by submitting calendar events, sharing tips, providing feedback on featured destinations or exchanging ideas at Facebook.com/510families and twitter.com/510families.

Cori Kesler, mother of two in Berkeley says, “Local sites list stuff I can’t do with my kids. Kid’s websites list stuff to do that is geographically undesirable. At 510Families.com I can clearly see exactly what to do in my neighborhood with my kids — on the day that I want to do it.
