LWV Civic Forum – Lessons Learned – Undergrounding Task Force

Posted by Len Gilbert on April 16, 2011

The Piedmont Hills Undergrounding Project has been controversial and several studies have been undertaken. Come join the League of Women Voters as we hear a presentation from the members of the League’s Undergrounding Task Force on Tuesday, April 26 at 7:30 in the City Council Chambers (120 Vista Avenue).

A panel will discuss lessons learned from this project and a question and answer period will follow. A second panel will look into civic engagement and how citizens can be a part of a continuing community building dialogue in our small but lively community. The League is providing an opportunity for the community to give voice to concerns and remedies in an arena where diverse perspectives are welcome each individual is treated with respect, and where we can look for common ground in an effort to sustain a robust community.

Piedmont Relays – All City Track and Field Meet for Kids

Posted by Len Gilbert on April 15, 2011

The annual Piedmont Relays are coming soon. To date over 100 kids have registered and more are expected to do so in the lead up to the event on Monday, April 25th. The first meet event is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. and since Monday is an early release school day for the kids, this will allow them plenty of time to get there in time for the start.

This is the only all-city track and field meet for Piedmont kids in grades 3 to 5, and brings together boys and girls from the three elementary schools in an afternoon of running, jumping, and throwing.

A new event has been added this year and for the first time the kids will be able to run in a 50 meter hurdle race.

There are two ways to sign up for the Piedmont Relays. Either complete an entry form and return it to the Recreation Department or sign up on-line, just go to the Relays website: http://www.piedmontrelays.com/about

Entry forms are available at the Recreation Department and the PE teachers at each school also have the forms. The pre-registration fee is just $10 and please note that the cutoff date for early registration has been extended to April 22nd. After that date, kids can sign-up at the meet on the 25th, but the entry fee is $15. All runners will receive a t-shirt (new design this year) and commemorative wrist band.

The meet events consist of a relay, sprint race, hurdles, distance run, turbo javelin throw, shot put, long jump and high jump. Every child will have an opportunity to try these events. The emphasis is on having fun, learning about track and field, and being a good sport. Proceeds from the meet benefit the Recreation Department, and the many sports programs that they offer the community. The meet will take place rain or shine
